Hustling to find reliable, friendly seasonal drivers during the most wonderful time of the year? Try reaching out to senior citizens, suggests Paul Goodman, MBA, CPA, PFCI, a contributing writer to Floral Management magazine, industry accounting expert and a presenter on Jan. 13 during the Society of American Florists’ 1-Day Profit Blast in Nashville, Tennessee sponsored by DWF Wholesale.
“Busy times require more drivers,” Goodman said. “A great source of drivers is to tap into the ‘retirement pool.’ These are people who are retired but would love to work some to supplement their income as well as to have something that keeps them busy. They’re usually not looking for full-time work. And they are perfect for adding hours before a holiday.”
Another tip from Goodman: If you want to plan effectively for Christmas (or, just around the corner, Valentine’s Day), look to your past.
“Look at the data from last year by day leading up to the holiday,” Goodman said. “Your POS should keep data on how many deliveries were done each day. Assume a driver can average about three deliveries per hour (four if they are close by). Divide your number of deliveries by three to see how many hours of delivery time you will need to cover. Make sure you have enough drivers scheduled to cover each day’s delivery load without overstaffing.”
Goodman will cover planning strategies and more at the Nashville 1-Day Profit Blast. Among other topics, he’ll address:
- How to set delivery zones and charges
- How to track drivers’ productivity
- Where to find quality drivers for holidays
