On Thursday, March 8, female businesswomen in Swift Current, Saskatchewan will receive a surprise gift of flowers.

This year, Poppy Parsons, AIFD, CAFA, owner of Smart Flowers will mark Women’s Day by recognizing the achievements of local women with floral gifts.

Additionally, in the weeks leading up to her giveaway, she has used social media posts to promote #PressForProgress, an initiative that emphasizes gender parity and encourages friends, colleagues and communities to “think, act and be gender inclusive.”

Given the political climate around the world, it’s more important than ever to applaud women’s accomplishments, Parsons said. “We need to talk about how successful we can be. We all have the same creative juice that runs through our veins, no matter what race or gender,” we said. “Sometimes women don’t promote themselves. They give themselves a break and don’t celebrate their success.”

She’s optimistic that, like the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, #PressForProgress will help spread awareness for Women’s Day. “Last year, it was clear many people in our small community hadn’t heart about the holiday,” she said.

When Parsons’ followers click on her #PressForProgress posts, they wind up on a site where they can electronically sign a pledge committing to values such as “forging the positive visibility of women” and “maintaining a gender parity mindset.”

While her focus is on primarily making businesswomen feel proud and happy, Parsons believes that giving back to her community will generate business down the road, when recipients’ appreciation comes back around.
