How Does SAF's Governance Work?

SAF’s Executive Committee is made up of the following positions:

  • President-Elect (collectively representing a retailer, wholesaler and grower)
  • President and Chair
  • Immediate Past President
  • Treasurer

The terms and election process are as follows:

President-Elect (Elected by the Board of Directors)

  • Serves 1-year term, then becomes the President and Chair (2 years), then the Immediate Past President (1 year).
  • Serves a total of 5 years on the Executive Committee.

Treasurer (Elected by the Board of Directors)

  • Serves a 3 year term.

SAF’s Board of Directors makes key decisions that guide SAF programs.

SAF’s Board of Directors is made up of the following positions:

  • 9 board members total
  • 3 in each segment (Retail, Wholesale, Grower), elected by SAF voting members in the respective segment and the Executive Committee

The terms and election process are as follows:

  • 3-year term: Staggered so each year a retailer, wholesaler, and grower member cycle off the board, and 3 new members join.
  • 1 international seat and up to two (non-voting) seats, appointed by the SAF Board of Directors.
  • Also serves as board liaison to respective Council during board term.

Meeting Schedule

  • Board members attend 4 meetings per year (March, May, August/Sept, and Oct/November).

SAF has 3 Councils, each representing the needs of its industry segment within the Society of American Florists.

SAF’s 3 Councils (Retailer, Grower, Wholesaler) are made up of the following positions:

  • 9 members on each council
  • 3 SAF board liaisons (1 on each council)
  • Council members also serve on one of SAF’s 4 Taskforces
  • Council members are eligible to run for the SAF Board of Directors

The terms and election process are as follows:

  • Elected by the SAF member voting members in the respective segment (i.e., SAF member retailers vote for Retail Council members).
  • 3-year terms, staggered so each year 3 members go off Council and 3 members join.

Meeting Schedule

  • Council Members attend 2 meetings per year (March and August or September)

SAF has 4 Taskforces:

  • Growth: The Growth Taskforce guides SAF in educating the floral community with resources to build and develop fulfilling careers and thriving businesses.
  • Connections: The Connections Taskforce guides SAF in cultivating connections across the industry to share ideas and solve problems.
  • Future: The Future Taskforce guides SAF in equipping the industry with the knowledge, insight and advocacy to navigate a successful future.
  • Longevity: The Longevity Taskforce guides SAF in enhancing the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the organization.

Taskforces are made up of the following positions:

  • 10-12 members on each Taskforce
  • Taskforces are made up of appointees from the Retail, Wholesale and Grower councils, Board appointees, and at-large appointees.

The terms and election process are as follows:

  • Each Council member appointed to a Taskforce during each year of their Council term
  • Most Council members serve on at least two Taskforces during their 3-year term

Meeting Schedule

  • Taskforce Members attend 2 meetings per year (March and August or September)

SAF has 3 committees that provide insights, guidance, and support for planning the organization’s major initiatives.

SAF’s 3 Committees (Next Gen, Awards, Convention) are made up of the following positions:

  • Committees are made up of appointees from all industry segments 

The terms and election process are as follows:

  • Each committee member is appointed by SAF’s President
  • Serve for various term lengths

Meeting Schedule

  • Committee Members attend 2 meetings per year (March and August or September)

Professional Floral Communicators – International is a network of professional floral business educators certified by SAF.

The PFCI Trustees are charged with reviewing PFCI applications each year and providing support and networking opportunities for PFCI members year-round; PFCI Trustees are also in charge of the annual Sylvia Cup Design Competition.

    The terms and election process are as follows:

    • Each member is appointed by SAF’s President
    • PFCI Board of Trustees Members serve 3-year terms

    Meeting Schedule

    • PFCI Board of Trustees Members attend 2 meetings per year (March and August or September)
