Elevate Your V-Day Designs with Intriguing Pairings

Fare thee well, Santa and Baby New Year; welcome, Cupid!

Is your Valentine menu ready? In a recent issue of Floral Management, a few members of the Society of American Florists’ Professional Floral Communicators-International weighed in on some of their favorite flowers and techniques to elevate basic red rose arrangements while easing sticker shock.

In the article, “Pairs Well with a Red (Rose),” you’ll find a range of suggestions, including tropical looks; romantic looks full of lush, feminine flowers; unexpected ways to add texture; and lots of ideas for greenery.

“Using creativity and style, you can make even a basic rose vase design stand apart from mass merchandisers,” says Vince Butera, AAF, AIFD, PFCI, the founder of Butera the Florist in Sedgwick, Maine, who offered several tips for adding texture, depth, and drama. He urges florists to think beyond baby’s breath and use three or more types of foliage such as silver dollar or gunni eucalyptus, salal, myrtle, leatherleaf, nagi or tree fern. “Choose any combo that fits the budget,” he says.
