Valentine’s Day Media Requests
As a shop owner, you are the spokesperson for your business and the local flower expert for your community. This Valentine’s Day, seize the opportunity to talk to the media and make it work to your advantage. You may be surprised at what a little added exposure can do for your year-round business.
Even if the reporter’s angle starts out on the negative side, with a little media know-how you can overcome common misconceptions (especially about the “contrived high cost” of Valentine’s Day roses) and get your message out loud and clear. By cooperating with the media and providing them with the information they need, you can develop valuable relationships and establish yourself as a reliable, expert resource for future stories as well.

Getting the "Test Order" Gold Star
Keep in mind that you may not always hear directly from the media even if they are doing a story on the cost of Valentine’s Day flowers. In the past several years, there have been numerous examples of “test order” stories during major holidays where reporters pose as consumers ordering flowers. They then write a story about their experience, showing pictures of arrangements they received, along with precise details on the cost and how their order was handled (courteousness of salespeople, accuracy of message card, timeliness of delivery, etc.). For some florists such stories have resulted in positive coverage; for others, not so good.
The lesson? Treat every order as if it will end up on the front page of your local newspaper.

Reminder: Easter Lilies & Cats
Several types of lilies can cause renal failure and sometime death if ingested by cats. Studies from Utah State University show a toxic connection between cats and the Lilium genera family, which includes the Easter lily, tiger lily, Rubrum lily, Japanese show lily and daylilies.
The Cat Fanciers’ Association suggests alternatives: Easter orchids, Easter cacti, Easter daisies or violets.
Below is information to share with customers.
The National Animal Poison Control Center says that certain types of lilies can cause renal failure in cats that have ingested any part of the lily. (Your shop name) recommends keeping lilies out of the reach of cats. It is important to note that lilies do not pose a problem for other pets or humans.

Five Easy Social Media Marketing Ideas For Mother’s Day
1. Do a series of posts (either in video or text with a picture) featuring employees’ fond memories they have of their mother or their thoughts about what it means to be a mother themselves. The description should briefly include what they do in the shop (i.e., floral designer, delivery driver, customer service associate), and make sure they are holding a flower(s) in their picture
2. On your social media channels, feature employees’ talking about their favorite flower (with a picture of them holding it!), and what type of mother it might appeal to. This is a fun way to educate your customers. For instance, post language might include:
- Meet our floral designer Mary! Her favorite flower is a Gerbera daisy. They are fun, cheerful, and whimsical. Moms who are adventurous and love spontaneity might gravitate toward this flower. What flower does your mom love?
- Our customer service manager, Lydia, adores orchids. Orchids are perfect for moms with exquisite style and sophisticated taste. What is your favorite flower?
- In honor of Mother’s Day coming up, do a post about how special moms are, and invite customers to comment about their moms. Feature a group picture of some of your employees holding a picture of their mom to capture attention. This can create some great engagement on your social media channels, and build good feelings and loyalty about your business.
Suggested post language: With Mother’s Day around the corner, it has us thinking about our moms! What is it about your mom that you love? Tell us below!
4 .Use your customers as your ambassadors. When customers come into the shop tell them you are featuring a series of posts on social media featuring peoples’ best memories of mom, and ask them if they would like to be a part of it! If so, all it takes is for you to take their picture (let them pick out a flower to hold!), and post it with a brief description of their favorite memory or their mom’s favorite color or flower. End the post with: Do you have a special mom memory? Share it below, or stop in the shop to tell
5. Hold a simple workshop in the two weeks prior to Mother’s Day where dads can bring the kids to give their spouse some time for herself. The kids get to make a little floral something for their mom (you decide what that is and charge accordingly). In addition to what the kids make, be sure to have options available that dad can order for a special Mother’s Day delivery. On Mother’s Day, be sure to post pictures of the fun that the dads and kids had doing something special for mom on your social media

Reminder: Poinsettia Toxicity
Despite common misconceptions, poinsettias are not highly toxic to pets. Research indicates that while ingestion may cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort, such as vomiting or diarrhea, serious health issues are rare. The plant’s milky sap can lead to minor irritation, but it is not considered deadly. It’s advisable to keep poinsettias out of reach of curious pets to prevent any potential discomfort.
