As more flower farms emerge across the country, florists have new opportunities to diversify their sourcing, strengthen community ties and bring unique seasonal products into their design work. But successful local sourcing takes more than simply placing an order.

For Kelsey Brazelton, creative director at Tipton & Hurst in Little Rock, Arkansas, finding the right farm partners meant evaluating everything from stem quality and pest management to consistency and reliability.

“I support this because I’m getting a consistent good-quality stem from a farmer I know and trust,” Brazelton says in the July/August issue of Floral Management

The number of U.S. cut-flower growers has grown significantly in recent years, creating new possibilities for florists interested in working with nearby farms. Industry experts say the key is building relationships, understanding seasonal availability and identifying where a grower’s strengths align with a shop’s needs.

While local sourcing can present challenges — from harvest schedules to pricing considerations — it can also open doors to distinctive products, fresh storytelling opportunities and deeper connections within the floral community.

Read “Make Local Work” in the September/October issue of Floral Management to learn how to build relationships with local growers, navigate sourcing considerations and create value through strategic local partnerships.
