Marie Ackerman AAF, AIFD, PFCI (1960-2021) was a passionate leader within American Institute of Floral Designers and a committed floral educator. A former trustee of the AIFD Foundation, Ackerman was always looking to the future, laying a foundation to prepare both individuals and industry for decades to come. This was evident in her memorable presentations, as well as her work in floral publishing. Ackerman was also instrumental in strengthening the AIFD Foundation with the fundraising campaign “March to a Million.”
To honor Ackerman’s legacy, the Marie Ackerman AIFD Fund has been established with an initial contribution from the South Central Regional Chapter in recognition of their former Chapter president. Each contribution to the Marie Ackerman AIFD Fund will add to A Lifetime of Learning in memory of an industry icon who dedicated her professional life to educating others.
Ackerman was a mentor and inspiration to many in the floral business, encouraging each person to be their best. “She lifted up everyone,” said Deborah De La Flor, AIFD, PFCI, CFD, owner of De La Flor Gardens in Cooper City, Florida. “She had a vast knowledge of floristry and was an exceptional teacher. The way she taught—with humor and straight talk—you learned quickly.”
