Color and commercial appeal, stem and foliage, bloom, and overall quality — those are the four categories on which entries in the Society of American Florists’ Outstanding Varieties Competition are judged. Past judge Lani Callister of Ensign Wholesale Floral in Salt Lake City, Utah, shares the other qualities she looks for in an outstanding variety and the significance that comes with winning a blue or red ribbon.
