The National Retail Federation expects flowers to top the list of most popular Mother’s Day gifts, with 72 percent of consumers surveyed saying that they’d buy flowers for the mothers in their lives.

The National Retail Federation has good news for the floral industry.

Flowers ranked second on a list of top gifts for Mother’s Day, just behind greeting cards, with 72 percent of those surveyed saying they would purchase flowers for the mothers in their lives, up from 68 percent last year.

The same survey, which polled 8,574 people, found that spending for Mother’s Day is expected to be at an all-time high of $31.7 billion, up $3.6 billion from 2021’s record-spending. Men plan to spend about $308, while women plan to spend $186.

Of the total spending, 2.9 billion is expected to be spent on flowers, ranking it fifth on the list of 11 spending categories, according to the NRF. Jewelry, special outings, electronics and gift cards were other top spending categories, respectively.

While spending on traditional gifts such as flowers are expected to be up from last year, the increase in total Mother’s Day spending is driven by jewelry purchases and special outings, the NRF says.

“Consumers are eager to find memorable ways to honor their mothers and other important women in their lives and are willing to spend a little extra on this sentimental holiday,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay.

When asked where consumers will shop for Mother’s Day gifts, just 23 percent indicated they planned to shop at a small or local business. Most respondents planned to shop online or in a department store, according the NRF.
