A SAF post-holiday survey found that red poinsettias remain an overwhelmingly popular pick in the category.
Christmas color trends may change, and Ultra Violet is the shade of the year, but when it comes to poinsettias — red remained the top seller for retail florists during the Christmas holiday season.
More than 90 percent of respondents to a Society of American Florists’ post-holiday survey said 21 percent or more of the poinsettias they sold were red.
Other poinsettia findings:
- Forty-two percent said poinsettia sales were steady in the December 2017 holiday season, compared to 2016 returns. Thirty-eight percent said sales were down.
- About 40 percent said that, when looking at five-year trends, poinsettia sales have been decreasing. Thirty percent classified those sales as flat over that time period.
- Among those who saw a sales increase in poinsettias this year, gains were modest: 19 percent said sales increased by 1 to 5 percent.
