To celebrate Women’s Day 2018, Wascana Flower Shoppe is leading a low-cost design workshop and hosting it at a location with major foot traffic — Starbucks.

The Regina, Saskatchewan florist landed on the idea for a workshop after noticing a large number of “Galentine’s” orders last month.

“Valentine’s Day is, traditionally, a lonely holiday if you’re single, but this year we saw a lot of girls celebrating themselves or their friends,” said manager Tanya Anderson. “We wanted to do something along those lines — something that encouraged women to have fun with their girl gang. And what better day to do that than International Women’s Day?”

At the workshop, participants will design a loose arrangement of purple and yellow flowers in a cube vase. “We kept the cost low, $30, so we could host a good number,” Anderson said. “The whole idea is to hang out with your posse, play with flowers and drink coffee.”

Showing up in unexpected places has proven successful for past Women’s Day events, Anderson said. In recent years, the shop has popped up at a local theater and a steak and chophouse. Additionally, Rosie, Wascana’s flower truck, also roams the city for Women’s Day, making stops downtown and near office parks.

A few years ago two Ukrainian designers, recalling the popularity of Women’s Day in their homeland, suggested trying the pop up concept for the holiday.

“We thought, ‘Why not?’ We Canadians should do more for this celebratory day,” Anderson said.

The key to successful Women’s Day sales, she said, has been creating awareness through social media, pushing affordable product (bouquets in the $25 to $60 range) and “above all else, bringing flowers to the people.”

“When people see Rosie out downtown, everyone flocks to us,” she said. “Men buy for the women in their personal lives and in the office, women buy for themselves and their friends — it’s just amazing!”
