Designers Trade Minimalism for Colors, Glam and Kitsch

Designers such as Ksenia Shestakovskaia are eschewing the “good taste” of minimalist design for over-the-top, sometimes kitschy décor.

If the words midcentury, modern, or Scandinavian make you want to run screaming from a curated room of blond furniture and into a space jam-packed with color and kitschy glam, you’re in luck. (As are your customers who feel the same.) High-end designers are ditching minimalist, tasteful décor in favor of a “maximalist” credo that embraces color, contrasts and (occasionally) the truly tacky.

“Not everyone dreams of a room with tulip table and an Eames chair,” writes Bonnie Wertheim for The New York Times. “Ksenia Shestakovskaia, for one, finds it all unbearably boring. She was working as a textile designer in Berlin when she came to see that simplicity and marketability had overtaken creativity.”

“I found at a certain point that things got so clean that they projected nothing,” Shestakovskaia told the Times.

Today, she’s the mastermind behind the Instagram account, @decorhardcore, which counts celebrities including Amy Sedaris, Lena Dunham and Adam Selman as fans.
