A customer at House of Flora in Hartford, Connecticut, bought a large bouquet of yellow roses for Día de la Flor Amarilla (Yellow Flower Day), in which celebrants give yellow flowers to the person they want to spend their lives with.

All eyes are on Valentine’s Day sales, but some florists have found a way to use smaller holidays to boost sales year-round.

For instance, Holly Itami Springfels of Kern Park Flower Shoppe was stunned by the unexpected surge in sales during National Girlfriend Day on August 1. The holiday, fueled by social media buzz, brought her Portland, Oregon, shop quadruple the sales of more traditional occasions. Now, Springfels is preparing to fully promote it this year.

The January/February issue of Floral Management highlights some other lesser known holidays. Florists are using innovative approaches, like hosting workshops for Galentine’s Day or crafting petite floral gifts for May Day, to draw in customers and create memorable experiences.

Even hyper-local holidays like Día de la Flor Amarilla (Yellow Flower Day) are showing significant sales potential. Tracy Parke of House of Flora in Hartford, Connecticut, credits this September celebration with increasing yellow flower sales and even attracting new clientele.

Read more about how florists are thinking outside the box to leverage sales opportunities throughout the year in “Surprise Holiday Hits” in the January/February issue of Floral Management. Get your calendar ready — the issue also includes a chart of small holidays and ideas to capitalize on them. Then, head to the Society of American Florists’ social media resource webpage to find pre-made images to help you promote the holidays.
