Anyone who’s ever had a pet knows it’s a painful and emotional event when Fluffy or Fido dies — a fact that veterinarians understand quite well.
Debbie’s Bloomers in El Paso, Texas, urges local veterinarians to send a small floral gift to clients grieving the loss of a pet.
In El Paso, Texas, Debbie’s Bloomers encourages vets to show empathy for their clients’ losses with flowers or plants.
“Most send a bud vase with a single rose or a 4-inch plant,” said Debbie’s Bloomers Vice President Marisa Guerrero. Either option costs $10.
The shop has marketed pet bereavement designs to area veterinarians for more than a decade and gets “at least several orders every day,” Guerrero said.
“Vets love this idea,” she said. “They know their clients are hurting and want to show that they care. The rose or plant is a pleasant surprise. It has a very positive effect.”
Pet bereavement gifts go out with a simple enclosure card that says “With Deepest Sympathies” and includes the flower shop’s information in small print.
Debbie’s Bloomers pitches similar promotions with other corporate clients in the medical field.
“There’s an ophthalmologist who sends plants to every patient recovering from surgery,” Guerrero said. “Apparently purple is the first color you see when your sight comes back, so he asks that we decorate the plant with a purple ribbon.”
These orders are simple to put together, help with cash flow and “make everyone feel better,” Guerrero said.
