Time to Pitch the PC?

This month in Floral Management magazine, SAF’s CIO Renato Sogueco answers a question for our new mobile age: Can you run your business without a PC?

Admit it: You can’t live without your smartphone.

You stay connected and productive, engaging with friends, coworkers and customers alike using social apps, email, texts and more.

Don’t worry. You aren’t alone. Smartphones, tablets and phablets are replacing PCs and laptops — fast. But is the PC dead? Can you really run a business just on mobile?

This month, in Floral Management magazine, the Society of American Florists’ CIO Renato Sogueco explores some of the benefits of going mobile:

Durability. Mobile devices are made to last. Think of that three-year-old iPad you gave to grandma because it still worked (and you wanted a new one) or devices you’ve dropped that still work. Compared even to most ultraportable laptops, mobile devices have amazing battery life — 10 hours is common for tablets (even longer for some smartphones).

Connectivity. Your smartphone will be always connected through one of the major cellular networks. Tablets, however, are the preferred mobile device to use at the office (and on the road) due to larger screen sizes. Tablets and iPads are also sold with optional cellular.

Productivity. What about your need to create documents, crunch numbers and do presentations? Try Google Apps ($10 per month, per user) or Microsoft Office365 ($12.50 per user, per month). For Mac and iOS folks, Apple provides a free built-in suite of apps (Pages, Numbers and Keynote), but this would only be a viable option in a Mac or iOS-only work environment. Sharing these documents with others will be a challenge.
