Recipes for these Day of the Dead designs, “Skully” (left) and “Un Poco Loco” (right), are available in the September/October issue of Floral Management.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday that’s gained popularity in America as a way to celebrate and honor deceased loved ones. The holiday is typically celebrated with brightly colored altars, sugar skulls, candles, photographs — and flowers, particularly marigolds.

Florists are creating festive arrangements that incorporate the holiday’s signature colors and symbols. In the September/October issue of Floral Management, Katie Vincent talked with two florists who provided inspiration for Day of the Dead floral designs.

“Skully”

Martha Aaron, AIFD, TMF, the owner of Sedona Mountain High Flowers in Sedona, Arizona, created the Skully design for her city’s annual Día de los Muertos festival. The arrangement features a basic weave of lime green design wire through three pieces of lily grass, which gives it an extra touch of flair and perceived value. The Skully design also includes a variety of brightly colored flowers, such as marigolds, gerbera daisies, and roses.

“Un Poco Loco”

Christine Guenther, owner of WildFlower in Arnold and Glen Burnie, Maryland, named the Un Poco Loco design after a song from the Disney movie “Coco.” The arrangement is made in a floral mug that is handmade by Guatemalan artisans. The mug is filled with a variety of colorful flowers, such as chrysanthemum disbuds, craspedia, statice, seeded eucalyptus, celosia, zinnias, and solidago.

For more details on those designs, including a design recipe and wholesale and retail prices, read “Celebration of Life” in the September/October issue of Floral Management.
