With the increasing use of artificial intelligence technologies such as chatbots (like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google Bard), it’s crucial to ensure that any business data you input is private and secure. Use this guide to help protect your data when using AI.
Understand the Basics
When you input data into ChatGPT or a similar AI model, the model processes the data to provide you with an appropriate response. Depending on your privacy settings—and the tool— your information may be used to train the AI model.
Know Where Your Data is Saved
If you have training mode on in tools such as ChatGPT, your questions or text are stored and used to further train the model. Always check the terms of service and privacy policy of the AI tool you are using.
Adjust Privacy Setting
Many platforms offer customization options for data storage and privacy. Familiarize yourself with these settings, and adjust them to ensure maximum privacy.
Secure Data Transmissions
Make sure that your connection to the AI platform is secure. Look for ‘https’ in the URL and a padlock symbol in the browser’s address bar. This indicates that data transmitted between you and the AI tool is encrypted/safe.
Update Regularly
AI platforms, like all software, are regularly updated to fix vulnerabilities. Check to make sure that you’re using the most recent version.
Limit Sensitive Data
Even if an AI platform’s terms state that it doesn’t store data, it’s a good practice not to share personal, sensitive or confidential information. If you want to use AI for private data, you can set up your own secure occurrence of most AI functions.
Choose Reputable AI Providers
Not all AI platforms have the same level of commitment to data privacy. Look for platforms with a strong track record and positive user reviews related to data security.
Backup Important Data
Always have a backup of important data. In case of unexpected issues or data corruption, backups can be lifesavers.
Conduct Regular Audits
Periodically review your company’s logs (if any) of AI interactions to understand the type of data AI is processing and ensure no sensitive data is inadvertently shared.
Stay Informed
The world of AI is rapidly evolving. Stay up-to-date on the latest in AI advancements and data privacy regulations to ensure continued compliance and safety.
