Acclaimed political analyst Reid Wilson will kick off the Society of American Florists’ 39th Annual Congressional Action Days on March 11.
“We are so pleased to bring Wilson to speak at CAD to educate participants on the nature of political spin and to offer nonpartisan analysis and insight into broad trends in the current political climate,” said Shawn McBurney, SAF’s senior director of government relations.
As a national correspondent for The Hill, Wilson provides expert political analysis on topics ranging from how daily events and trends across the country could influence public policy to down-to-the-wire election results. Previously, he served as the chief political correspondent and Congress editor of Morning Consult, editor of The Washington Post’s morning political tip sheet, “Read In,” and “Govbeat” blog, and editor-in-chief of National Journal’s daily political briefing, “The Hotline.”
His political expertise has made him a sought after contributor to The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic, MSNBC, CNN, C-SPAN and numerous national radio programs. He’s also a favorite guest on Comedy Central for his ability to cut through the spin and offer real talk about the state of Washington. In 2012, the station dubbed him “the greatest political mind of our time.”
SAF taps distinguished speakers such as Reid to give CAD participants insider knowledge to empower them to speak confidently during their Congressional visits, McBurney said.
Educating lawmakers about floriculture’s legislative priorities and their businesses is what brings retailers, wholesalers, importers, suppliers and growers to CAD.
“We can’t affect change if we don’t use our voices,” said CAD veteran participant Scott Isensee of Frank Adams Wholesale Florist in Portland, Oregon. “I cannot overstate how important it is to meet with our representatives and tell our individual stories.”
In addition to bolstering his message with background from political experts, Isensee finds it helpful to consult others in the industry. “CAD is a great opportunity to network with our peers and discuss challenges and issues that often face all of us,,” he said. “The bonus is it truly is a wonderful experience.”
