When a local politician in the Philadelphia area wanted to connect with his constituents, he turned to a longtime family florist.
Councilman Bobby Henon stopped by Stein Your Florist Co. last week as part of his “Undercover Councilman” series. In a lively nine-minute video posted to Facebook, Henon tried his hand at making a Thanksgiving centerpiece alongside owner Patrick Kelly. He praised Stein’s 130-year-history and encouraged viewers to support the business on Small Business Saturday — and year-round.
“It’s a unique, historic location,” Henon said of the longtime business, which was recently profiled in Floral Management magazine. “I’m here to see how small businesses grow, and how I can continue to support them so they stay here forever.”
Henon is a customer of the business in addition to being the area’s councilman, said Jennifer Kelly, who oversees marketing for her family’s business.
“He’s a great councilman and is really in touch with the community, so we were thrilled to have him out,” Jennifer said. “And, I love free publicity.”
Henon has been in the business before in a professional capacity to see some of the shop’s environmental efforts, including its green roof.
“He’s also excited about our current campaign to raise awareness for type 1 diabetes and is going to help us spread the word further,” Jennifer explained. “My nephew, Gavin, was diagnosed with T1D back in April, so the cause is very close to our hearts.”
