Bergdorf Goodman Puts Flowers Center Stage in Holiday Windows, Ads

“Our windows on Fifth Avenue are some of the tallest in the world, so we exploit the height,” David Hoey, Bergdorf Goodman’s resident window dresser, told New York magazine. “We want to induce aesthetic delirium.”

Bergdorf Goodman’s iconic holiday window displays in New York City this year include a special nod to flowers and plants.

The department store themed its 2017 windows around its hometown, calling the series “To New York, With Love.” Each window is dedicated to an NYC cultural institution, including the New York Botanical Garden.

David Hoey, Bergdorf Goodman’s resident window dresser, told New York magazine that the Botanical Garden window is a testament to his team’s “obsession” with texture — the window includes flowers and plants recreated in felt, needlepoint, embroidery, soft sculpture and more. The visual merchandising team also went to great lengths to include the proper Latin name for all botanicals represented.

“Our windows on Fifth Avenue are some of the tallest in the world, so we exploit the height,” Hoey said, of the impressive results. “We want to induce aesthetic delirium.”

Check out a video of the windows, along with some backstory on how the looks come together. (Hint: Hoey and his team take about 11 months to create the signature holiday designs.)

A sweater designed by Rosie Assoulin is featured prominently in Bergdorf Goodman Christmas print ads. The pullover retails for $1,295 and was inspired by “bodega/deli flower wrappers.”

That’s not the only flower-friendly messaging coming out of the acclaimed department store this season either. The store is also featuring a mock-neck red and white sweater festooned with the words “Say It With Flowers” in print holiday ads, including a prominent placement last weekend in The New York Times Style section. The pullover, designed by Rosie Assoulin, retails for — wait for it — $1,295 and was “inspired by bodega/deli flower wrappers.”
