In today’s fast-moving social landscape, pretty pictures alone won’t cut it. If you want to stop the scroll, it’s time to rethink how you showcase your designs online.
Algorithms now favor reels, multi-image carousels and consistent story posts — and floral designers who understand that balance are seeing the payoff. Canadian designer and social media guru Donald Yim, AIFD, PFCI, has built a reputation for creating work that not only wows in person but also shines on screen.
“I recommend mixing funny or trending reels with more polished, product-focused content,” says Yim in the January/February issue of Floral Management. “Humor and personality help people connect with you while clean, well-shot product pieces build credibility.”
For Yim, balance is everything. Fast-moving reels can still highlight product — if the lighting is right, the framing is clean and transitions are intentional. Natural light is your best friend, he advises, and simple, neutral backgrounds in soft gray, beige or white help blooms take center stage. Even subtle movement, like a gentle turntable spin or a hand reveal, can make arrangements feel dynamic and alive on video.
