December presents many opportunities for the team at Wascana Flower Shoppe in Regina, Saskatchewan, to flaunt their vast offerings that cater to customers’ diverse tastes for decor and giftware. Among their holiday selections: Christmas tree kits, wreaths, amaryllis, poinsettias, dish gardens in gingerbread planters, terrarium ornaments, Grinch trees and copious goodies ideal for stocking stuffers.
This year, the shop added a new luxury option: a floral advent calendar, in which the customer receives a different item each day leading up until Christmas.
“It’s a touch of everything we do,” said owner Petra Janssen.
Priced at $250, the advent calendar starts small with an ornament, moving up to things like a miniature live Christmas tree, a box of chocolates, a basket of bath products and petite floral arrangements, ending with an “OMG surprise” on Christmas Eve.
“Some days, the gifts are small. Other days, they’re larger,” Janssen said. “We went for a mix to make the concept affordable. We also absorbed the delivery fee.”
Janssen came up the idea following a trip to Europe. “We witnessed so many different types of businesses offering advent calendars and decided we wanted to come up with the ultimate advent calendar for the true flower lover,” she said.
The advent calendar exposes Wascana customers to the shop’s range of services, gets them excited for upcoming surprises and acclimates them to having flowers around regularly.
“It’s definitely not for everyone — but the people who’ve bought them have been giving amazing reviews,” Janssen said.
