General Mills to Consumers: Buy and Plant Wildflowers

by | Mar 15, 2017 | Floral Industry News | 0 comments

To promote pollinator health, General Mills removed its trademark BuzzBee character from boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios sold in Canada and the U.S.

Customers who pick up a box of Honey Nut Cheerios this spring will notice a key character missing: BuzzBee, the friendly bee familiar to any Honey Nut lovers, has been removed from the cereal boxes to help increase awareness of the importance of pollinators.

The Minnesota-based “food company is asking consumers to help ‘bring the bees back’ by ordering and planting free wildflowers for the pollinators to feast on,” according to the Star-Tribune.

The company also set up website  for people to order wildflower seeds that will be shipped to homes at no cost.

“General Mills hopes this will help the firm reach its goal of planting 100 million wildflowers this year while bringing greater awareness of the role that bees play in the food system,” according to the news story.
