In his first State of the Union address, President Trump told the country the United States is poised for “a new American moment.” In the address, he spoke of the strong U.S. economy and called for a $1.5 trillion spending bill to rebuild the country’s infrastructure. The president also discussed plans to overhaul the country’s immigration system, including his proposal for a wall on the border with Mexico and the need to create a path to citizenship for the country’s 1.8 million Dreamers.

The speech, among the longest in history for the presidential address, has received extensive coverage. And while President Trump called for bipartisanship, the country remains deeply divided — a fact that underscores the need for citizen input in Washington, D.C., said Shawn McBurney, the Society of American Florists’ senior director of government relations.

“During the address, the president referred to a possible bipartisan approach to immigration,” McBurney said. “I hope that signals an effort to tackle that critical issue that has been unaddressed for far too long. Now more than ever, it’s important for lawmakers to hear stories directly from their constituents, so that they can understand how laws and reforms affect the people they’ve been elected to represent.”
