Despite its indisputable status as an essential for human life, water remains something many people take for granted. A new campaign by the San Diego Water Authority aims to change that — with the help of SAF member Resendiz Brothers Protea Growers in Fallbrook, California.

Called “Brought To You By Water,” the educational outreach program involves the SDWA’s 24 member agencies and eight companies from a range of industries, including an avocado grower, a brewer, a safari park and a hotel, that illustrate how they use water to provide goods and services that consumers love.

“A lot of people have the opinion that water should be free,” said Diana Roy, Resendiz Brothers’ business manager. “Brought To You By Water is meant to open their eyes to why we pay for water and all the things it creates. It’s of vital importance to our local economy — and quality of life — to have a safe and reliable water source.”

In mid May, the SDWA contacted Roy, inquiring if the farm would be willing to host a camera crew and talk about how they use water to grow proteas. Her answer: a resounding yes. Less than two weeks later, filming started.

“It was amazing watching them drag all this equipment through the farm,” Roy said. “We can’t wait to see the finished product. And we’re honored to be a part of promoting this message.”

Brought To You By Water launched May 1 with an Instagram contest, in observance of Water Awareness Month. Promotional materials created at Resendiz Brothers and the other partners’ businesses will be used online and during live events attended by elected officials, media, business leaders and water experts. The program, which runs through 2019, will offer opportunities for businesses and industries to promote achievements in water-use efficiency and the importance of maintaining San Diego’s water infrastructure.

Roy offered behind the scenes photos and more information about the campaign in a recent blog post. Click here to check it out.
