Use ‘Gift’ in V-Day Tags to Nab More Sales

Valentine’s Day 2016, try marketing your products as “floral gifts” rather than “flowers.”

According to search engine Bing, 40 percent of Valentine’s searches last year used ‘gift’ as a keyword. This is valuable info to pass along to whoever does SEO for your website.

“Put “gift” in the title tag and the meta description of any web page that you want to be found during Valentine’s Day, as well as the first headline and within the text,” advises Renato Sogueco, the Society of American Florists’ chief information officer and author of Floral Management’s monthly Plugged in column. Bing compiled this and other data into a Valentine’s Day insights report, packaged with tips for digital marketers. Here are a few of its highlights:

• Twenty six percent of consumers research products online before buying.
• Roughly one-third of Valentine’s Day searches happen on a mobile device.
• The average consumer spent $142 on Valentine’s Day 2015, up 6 percent from 2014.
• Ad copy that included superlatives such as “best,” “top,” or “favorite” got the most clicks.
• Searches for flowers increased 48 percent between February 7-14.
• Shoppers responded most to florist ads that mentioned “a great selection.”
