You’re days away from one of the biggest holidays of the year. Don’t panic.

“Mother’s Day can be a lot easier, profitable and stress-free if your team sticks to these two simple rules when taking outgoing orders,” said Tim Huckabee, president of FloralStrategies, LLC and a featured speaker at the Society of American Florists 1-Day Profit Blast on May 20 in Detroit:

  • Sell colors and color schemes, not specifics.
  • Never send an order without a contact phone for the recipient.

To the first point, Huckabee said,“You don’t know what the filling shop will or won’t have.” He suggested recommending “an arrangement of garden flowers in bright summer colors, a perfect Mother’s Day gift.”

As for the contact information, “many shops will reject an order based on not having a contact phone number,” he said.

Sponsored by Nordlie and Kennicott Brothers Company, the SAF 1-Day Profit Blast in Detroit features four experts speaking on topics from profitable designs to online marketing and accounting strategies — along with Huckabee who will present “Smart Selling.”

This presentation is an interactive version of Huckabee’s Floral Management column. His Profit Blast session is primed to get participants thinking past just order taking, and really engaging with the client. Huckabee even will make live “mystery shopper” calls to real florists so Profit Blast participants can listen in — and hear the difference in his training.

“It’s surprising how many florists ask customers questions like, ‘How much do you want to spend?’ or promise a fictitious, ‘nice size,’ arrangement,” Huckabee said. “And then we’ll call a shop that is using the FloralStrategies process, and the room hears a whole new, level of professional engagement.”

In addition to Huckabee’s session, the SAF 1-Day Profit Blast in Detroit features “Mastering QuickBooks for Quick Profits,” with Michael Pugh, AAF, owner of Pugh’s Flowers; “Exceeding the Design Demands of Today’s Gift Givers” with Laura Deluga, AIFD owner of the Department of Floristry; and “Driving Local Orders to Your Shop” with Rakini Chinery, AAF, AzMF, owner of Allan ‘s Flowers; as well as a Supplier Showcase.

SAF extended the early-bird ticket prices for SAF’s 1-Day Profit Blast in Detroit on May 20 at the Doubletree By Hilton. Register by May 16 and tickets are just $139 for members and $189 for non-members; additional registrants from the same company are only $99. For details and to register, click here.
