Rissee Zimmerman transformed an old pottery workbench into a prom display to show teens all she can do.

As the adage goes, seeing is believing. That’s why Rissee Zimmerman made a visual merchandising display a priority for prom season.

To showcase the range of what she can do, the owner of Iris Blossoms Flower Shop in Clearwater, Kansas, repurposed a pottery workbench into a multi-level display that sits at the front of her shop.

Zimmerman resolved to promote more fancy bracelets and finishing touches — perfect for teens to flaunt their unique personalities and a boon to her bottom line — after noticing how many of her customers’ designs looked indistinguishable last year. (The mother of a teenage son, she had the opportunity to see his friends and their dates together in a big group, and realized she’d sold the same style over and over.)

“I have rhinestones, pearls, rhinestone sprays, and crystal flowers to add on,” she said. “Bling makes the corsage and boutonniere pop, which makes it special. The prom bar is convenient because customers can see everything that is available.”

The key to success with the display is organization, Zimmerman said. At eye level on the three-tiered bench, she placed a jewelry rack with sample wristlets arranged next to signage for the three prom packages she offers: Basic ($35), Deluxe ($50), and Premium ($65). On a shelf below, she tucked bins with all of her ribbon choices; on the shelf above, she placed vases filled with all of her “bling” options, from shining rhinestone accents to colorful pins. The display also includes a container with scissors, a stapler and other tools, so she has everything she needs to take orders available at arm’s reach.
