The Society of American Florists’ 1-Day Profit Blast heads to Detroit this Sunday, May 20. Sponsored by Nordlie and Kennicott Brothers Company, the event features a design presentation that showcases what today’s gift givers really want, and educational programs covering how to save time and money using QuickBooks, proven techniques to improve your customer service and sales approach, how to drive local orders to your shop, plus a Supplier Showcase with the latest technology, products and flowers.

Debbie Katz, co-owner of Schramm’s Flowers & Gifts in Toledo, Ohio, is looking forward to learning how to maximize QuickBooks.

“We already use QuickBooks, but we assume there are many functions we could utilize that we currently aren’t,” Katz said. “We don’t use it for invoicing, for example.”

She’s also looking forward to getting to meet fellow floral designers. “Meeting other business owners and learning from shared experiences will be exciting,” she added.

For Bill Ardle and his wife Kathy, who have owned Schneider’s Florist in Springfield, Ohio, for the last 47 years, the 1-Day Profit Blast in Detroit will be one of their last industry meetings before they turn over the business to their son and daughter-in-law.

“We are hoping to learn a couple QuickBooks tricks which will aid the new owners when they take over,” Ardle said. “We would also like to talk to other florists that are in the process of business transition to new owners.”

Ardle knows making connections is a winning move. “These are tough times for flower shops, and we all need the latest in business survival skills,” he said. “Over the years, I have often found that learning just one idea at an industry event will pay for the whole event.”

Teresa Cytlak will represent Ridgeway Floral in Three Rivers, Michigan, at the Profit Blast in Detroit. She’s looking forward to it.

“When I heard about this at the MFA Board meeting, I jumped at the chance to be an attendee,” said Cytlak who volunteers behind-the-scenes at the Michigan Floral Association’s Great Lakes Expo.
