Amidst Winter’s Fury, Boston Florist ‘Conceives’ Clever Idea

Boston florist Rick Canale announced a future discount for people who conceived during last week’s Winter Storm Skylar.

What do people do when extreme winter conditions leave them isolated at home? One florist’s bet: get frisky.

For couples who combatted the boredom of Winter Storm Skylar with a little hanky panky, Rick Canale of Exotic Flowers in Boston, Massachusetts, issued a special promotion: a 30 percent discount in nine months for new baby arrangements.

“Fairly simple, you have a baby in December, you get a discount,” Canale said. “Just mention the storm, and we’ll know how it happened.”

Taking it one step further, he offered a complimentary gift of a dozen roses to future parents who name their snow baby Skylar. (Proving this with a birth certificate is not necessary, Canale said; followers can just mention the discount to get the reward, as the effort was primarily intended to spark “lots of laughs and reinforcement.”)

As the city of Boston hunkered down, Canale figured that his community was in need of some comic relief, so he saw the offering as an opportunity to lift customers’ spirits.

“Cities like Boston do not normally shut down, but Skylar kept everyone home,” Canale said. “This storm was incredibly depressing, so I thought I would bring some humor to our plight.”

The most challenging part of developing an online following is finding a way to have your personality shine through, so clever, tongue-in-cheek postings like this one can help florists gain social media traction. Canale said that he posts regularly, and makes sure to include a photo to catch his followers’ attention. Instead of offering traditional coupons, he finds ways to offer discounts through social media that are creative and memorable. This particular post received more than 200 likes, 10 shares, several comments and around 1,700 views on Facebook.
