Musicians Fill Storied Spanish Theater with Plants

Musicians performed in Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house to an audience filled with nearly 2,300 plants. Spectators, the human kind, could watch the performance online.

Looking for some lighthearted, flower-friendly news to share on your social platforms this week? How about a story about a venerable Spanish arts institution transforming a musical performance into a serenade just for plants?

On June 22, musicians performed in Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house to an audience filled with nearly 2,300 plants. “Although humans were not present in the audience, spectators could watch the ‘Concierto para el bioceno’ via livestream,” according to CNN.

Spain’s coronavirus state of emergency temporarily shuttered the theater in March, making Monday’s performance a return to normal — sort of. In a statement, theater administrators explained that, following this “strange, painful period,” they wanted to “offer a different perspective for our return to activity, a perspective that brings us closer to something as essential as our relationship with nature.”

Administrators also noted that the historic theater “welcomes and leads a highly symbolic act that defends the value of art, music and nature as a letter of introduction to our return to activity.”

According to CNN, “the plants were brought in from nearby nurseries and each one will be donated to a healthcare worker from the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona.”
